That offbeat song that captured so much imagination in Melissa Mergner’s wonderful audio-video presentation at the annual swim team banquet is called “The Swimming Song,” performed by Loudon
After several years of playing a wide variety of tunes during the Dolphins swim team meets at NWB, it took a comment by my then 9-year-old son to put two and two together. It was the middle of winter when we happened to hear the Dave Clark Five singing “Catch Us If You Can.” This was a song out of the Sixties and was unlikely to mean anything to someone born in 1996. Yet there was Kevin, smiling and saying: “I like this song; it reminds me of summer at NWB.” In the same way that Kevin Shea described his own childhood at our pool in his masterful essay on out Blog site, Kevin Mackenzie was building wonderful memories. And they were linked to music. Or they once were.
So see below for sounds of summer that might be familiar from those past meets.
