Back When There Was a High Diving Board
By Richard Mackenzie

This aged and slightly blurry photo gives a snapshot of what NWB looked like when it was first built more than 40 years ago. As the picture attests, there once was a high diving board. That board has long gone, Much, much later, it was replaced by today’s slide. We believe the photo was taken circa 1969, just a few years after NWB opened, about the time that Eric Sandt was setting a 25-meter, 10-and-Under Butterfly record that would stand for an incredible 28 years (later broken by Luke Wang and then Doug Mackenzie who now holds it). We understand that’s Eric at center in the photo. The full story of Eric’s record, and how Luke finally broke it, is told through a link on the Pages of History section or in a direct link to a 1997 issue of the unofficial and short-lived Dolphin News.

The swim suits may have been a bit different back then but, as this photo proves, the Dolphins team pride and the happy demeanors were there from the very beginning. It’s another example of our great inheritance.

Enjoy!
